The Science Behind the Beauty
Beautiful skin isn't luck. It's biology, and a routine that works with it instead of against it.
Every Beau'vera formula was chosen for one job: helping dry, tight, cracking skin hold on to the water it needs. This page walks through exactly how that works, from the structure of your skin to every key ingredient in the ritual, so you know what you're putting on your face and why.

Your skin barrier, explained
The outermost layer of your skin, the stratum corneum, is thinner than a sheet of paper, yet it does one of the most important jobs in your body: it keeps water in and irritants out. Dermatologists often describe it as a brick-and-mortar wall.
- The bricks are flattened skin cells called corneocytes. Inside them is your skin's Natural Moisturizing Factor (NMF), a blend of amino acids, sugars and salts that attracts and holds water.
- The mortar is a precise mix of lipids that fills the gaps between those cells: roughly half ceramides, about a quarter cholesterol, and the rest free fatty acids.
When the wall is intact, skin feels soft, smooth and comfortable. When the mortar thins out, water escapes through the gaps. Scientists call this transepidermal water loss (TEWL), and it's the root of the tight, rough, flaky feeling most of us know too well.
Why skin gets dry, tight and cracked
Skin doesn't crack overnight. It happens when water leaves faster than your barrier can hold it. The most common culprits:
- Low humidity and cold air. Winter weather and indoor heating pull water from the skin's surface.
- Hot water and long showers. Heat loosens and strips the barrier lipids that keep water in.
- Harsh or frequent cleansing. Over-washing removes the oils your barrier depends on.
- Frequent handwashing and sanitizers, especially for people on their feet all day.
- Age. As we get older, skin naturally produces fewer lipids and less NMF.
- Sun and environmental stress, which wear down the barrier over time.
As skin loses water, it loses flexibility. Dry skin can't stretch and bend the way hydrated skin can, which is why it starts to feel tight, look dull, flake, and, in the driest areas, crack. The answer isn't one miracle ingredient. It's giving skin water, softening it, and helping it keep that water in place.
Hydration vs. moisture: the three jobs
"Hydrating" and "moisturizing" get used interchangeably, but they're different jobs. Truly comfortable skin needs all three:
1. Humectants: pull water in
Humectants are water magnets. They draw water into the upper layers of the skin and hold it there. In the ritual: glycerin, sodium hyaluronate (hyaluronic acid), beta-glucan, panthenol, propanediol, betaine and fructose.
2. Emollients: soften and smooth
Emollients fill in the tiny gaps between rough, lifted skin cells so the surface feels smooth and supple instead of papery. In the ritual: squalane, caprylic/capric triglyceride, ethylhexyl palmitate, cetearyl alcohol and glyceryl stearate.
3. Occlusives: seal it in
Occlusives form a breathable, protective layer on top of the skin that slows water from evaporating. In the ritual: dimethicone, dimethiconol and mineral oil (in the eye cream).
Layered together, these three work as a team: the humectants bring water in, the emollients soften the surface, and the occlusives help keep that water where it belongs. That's exactly why the ritual is six steps instead of one.
How the 6-step ritual is built
Each step has a specific job, and the order follows a simple rule from skincare science: thinnest to thickest, water-based to richest. Lighter formulas absorb first, and richer ones go on top to lock everything in.
- Step 1, Cleanse: clears away oil, dirt and makeup so everything after it can reach your skin.
- Step 2, Tone: the first layer of hydration, delivered in a thin, fast-absorbing form.
- Step 3, Serum: the most concentrated blend of supportive ingredients, applied while skin is most receptive.
- Step 4, Eye Cream: targeted care for the thinnest, most delicate skin on your face.
- Step 5, Lotion: replenishes the barrier's own building blocks and adds lasting moisture.
- Step 6, Overnight Cream: the richest layer, working while you sleep, when skin naturally loses the most water.
The ingredients, up close
Here's every key ingredient in the ritual, what it does, and where you'll find it.
Hyaluronic acid (sodium hyaluronate)
A molecule your body already makes, famous for how much water it can hold. As sodium hyaluronate, it draws water into the skin's surface for an instantly plumper, dewier look.
Found in: Toner, Glowing Serum, Deep Hydration Lotion.
Glycerin
One of the most studied humectants in skincare, and one of the most effective. It's also naturally present in healthy skin, where it helps keep the outer layer flexible.
Found in: all six products.
Niacinamide (vitamin B3)
A skincare multitasker. Research shows niacinamide helps skin produce more of its own ceramides, the "mortar" of the barrier, which helps skin hold on to moisture. It also helps even out the look of skin tone and texture.
Found in: Toner, Glowing Serum, Deep Hydration Lotion.
Ceramide NP and cholesterol
These are two of the exact lipids that make up your skin's barrier. Applying them topically helps replenish the "mortar" between skin cells, so water stays in and skin feels comfortable again.
Found in: Deep Hydration Lotion.
Beta-glucan
A soothing, hydrating sugar derived from natural sources like oats and yeast. It holds water beautifully and helps calm the look of redness and dryness.
Found in: Toner, Glowing Serum.
Panthenol (pro-vitamin B5)
Converts to vitamin B5 in the skin. It's a humectant and softener known for comforting dry, rough, stressed skin.
Found in: Toner, Glowing Serum, Deep Hydration Lotion.
Squalane
A lightweight oil that closely mimics squalene, one of the lipids your skin naturally produces. It softens and seals in moisture without a heavy or greasy feel.
Found in: Toner, Deep Hydration Lotion, Overnight Barrier Repair Cream.
Centella asiatica (cica)
A botanical used in skincare for generations, prized for calming and comforting skin that feels dry, tight or irritated.
Found in: Toner, Glowing Serum.
Allantoin
A gentle ingredient that soothes and helps smooth rough, flaky patches, leaving skin feeling softer.
Found in: Toner, Glowing Serum, Overnight Barrier Repair Cream.
Bifida ferment filtrate
A probiotic-derived ferment. Fermented ingredients are used to support a resilient, healthy-looking skin barrier and help skin better handle everyday environmental stress.
Found in: Cleanser, Toner, Glowing Serum, Eye Cream, Overnight Barrier Repair Cream.
Licorice root extract and green tea extract
Licorice root (glycyrrhiza glabra) helps brighten the look of dull, uneven skin and calm the look of redness. Green tea (camellia sinensis) is rich in antioxidants that help protect skin from everyday environmental stress.
Found in: Glowing Serum (both), Overnight Barrier Repair Cream (green tea).
Aloe vera
A classic soothing botanical that adds a cooling, comforting touch.
Found in: Cleanser, Eye Cream.
Retinol (vitamin A)
One of the most researched ingredients in skincare. Retinol encourages skin's natural renewal, helping skin look smoother and more even over time. Because it can be sensitizing and makes skin more sensitive to the sun, it lives only in the night cream.
Found in: Overnight Barrier Repair Cream.
Ectoin
A protective molecule first discovered in microorganisms that thrive in extreme environments like salt flats and deserts. In skincare, it helps skin hold water and feel more resilient against dryness and stress.
Found in: Overnight Barrier Repair Cream.
Acetyl hexapeptide-8
A peptide, which is a short chain of amino acids, often used to help soften the look of fine expression lines.
Found in: Overnight Barrier Repair Cream.
Collagen
Applied to the skin, collagen acts as a humectant and film-former. It holds moisture on the surface and leaves skin feeling smooth and plumped. It doesn't replace the collagen inside your skin, but it's an excellent surface hydrator.
Found in: Overnight Barrier Repair Cream.
The eye cream botanicals
The skin around your eyes is some of the thinnest on your body, so the eye cream has its own supporting cast: algae oligosaccharides and chondrus crispus (Irish moss) extract for lightweight hydration, hydrolyzed pearl for a soft, luminous look, stephania tetrandra extract and yeast extract as conditioning botanicals, and betaine, a gentle humectant.
Found in: Eye Cream.
The science, product by product
Step 1 · Cleanser (100 g)
A rich foaming cleanser built from classic fatty acids (stearic, myristic and lauric acid) that lift away oil, dirt and makeup. Glycerin and aloe cushion the cleanse so skin doesn't feel stripped, and bifida ferment supports the barrier from the very first step.
Step 2 · Toner (100 ml)
A true hydrating toner, not an astringent. It layers hyaluronic acid, beta-glucan, panthenol and glycerin for a first wave of water, adds niacinamide and squalane to start supporting the barrier, and finishes with cica and allantoin to calm.
Step 3 · Glowing Serum (40 ml)
The ritual's most concentrated layer. Niacinamide and hyaluronic acid hydrate and support, licorice root and green tea bring brightness and antioxidant protection, and cica, beta-glucan and panthenol keep skin calm and comfortable.
Step 4 · Eye Cream (15 g)
A lightweight cream for the delicate eye area. Humectants like glycerin and betaine hydrate, softening emollients smooth, and algae, Irish moss, hydrolyzed pearl and aloe care for this thin, fragile skin.
Step 5 · Deep Hydration Lotion (100 ml)
The barrier-builder. It contains two of the exact lipids your skin barrier is made of, ceramide NP and cholesterol, plus niacinamide, squalane, hyaluronic acid and panthenol, to help skin rebuild its moisture "mortar" and stay hydrated for hours.
Step 6 · Overnight Barrier Repair Cream (50 g)
The richest step, designed for the hours when skin loses the most water. Retinol encourages renewal for smoother-looking skin, ectoin, collagen and squalane hold in moisture, acetyl hexapeptide-8 helps soften the look of fine lines, and allantoin and green tea keep skin calm while you sleep.
What's not inside
What's left out matters as much as what's put in, especially for dry skin.
- No added fragrance. None of the six formulas list fragrance or parfum. Fragrance is one of the most common triggers for skin sensitivity.
- No parabens. The ritual uses a modern preservative system instead (see below).
- No drying alcohols. There's no alcohol denat. or SD alcohol. You'll see cetearyl alcohol on the cream and lotion labels, but that's a fatty alcohol: a waxy, softening emollient that actually helps moisturize.
How the formulas stay fresh: every water-based product needs protection from bacteria and mold. The ritual uses gentle, widely used preservatives and boosters such as phenoxyethanol, ethylhexylglycerin, hydroxyacetophenone, 1,2-hexanediol, caprylyl glycol, glyceryl caprylate and sodium benzoate, plus stabilizers like sodium phytate and disodium EDTA and pH balancers like citric acid and sodium citrate to keep each formula gentle on skin.
Full transparency: the Eye Cream contains two cosmetic colorants, CI 19140 and CI 15985, which give the formula its tint. You can read every ingredient in every product on the product page.
Using the ritual safely
- Patch test first. Before your first full use, apply a small amount of each product to your inner wrist and wait 24 hours.
- Ease into retinol. If you're new to retinol, use the Overnight Barrier Repair Cream every other night for the first week or two, then build up to nightly.
- Wear sunscreen every morning. Retinol makes skin more sensitive to the sun, so finish your morning routine with a broad-spectrum sunscreen.
- Pregnant or nursing? Talk with your doctor before using retinol products.
- Mind the eyes. Keep all products except the Eye Cream away from direct contact with your eyes. If contact happens, rinse with water.
- Listen to your skin. If you notice irritation, stop using the product and consult a healthcare professional.
What to expect, and when
Your skin renews itself in cycles of roughly four weeks, and that cycle slows down as we age. Consistency is what turns good ingredients into visible results. Here's what many people experience:
- Right away: skin feels hydrated, softer and more comfortable after the first use.
- After 1–2 weeks: less tightness, fewer flaky patches, and a smoother feel.
- After 4–8 weeks: a more even, radiant-looking complexion and softer-looking dry areas as skin completes its renewal cycles.
Results vary from person to person. The ritual is a cosmetic routine for dry skin and isn't intended to diagnose, treat or cure any skin condition. If you have a medical skin concern, please see a healthcare professional.
